仄暗い会場の中心には、全面鏡張りの大きなキューブが設置されていた。
ショーが始まるまで、観客は嫌でも鏡ごしに映る自分たちを見ざるを得ない。
開始時間を2時間過ぎて、やっと会場の照明が落ち、キューブがライトアップされ、ショーが始まった。
キューブの内側は、まさに養成所のように壁や床が真っ白に塗られていた。
最初に登場したモデルはケイト・モス。
ベージュのドレスに、肩から滝のように流れるフェザーを纏い、頭には布がバンデージのように巻かれていた。
マックイーン曰く、このバンデージはまさに治療、自らを変える治療の象徴だそうだ。
舞台となっているキューブ、実は内側も鏡で覆われていた。
そのため、内側にいるモデルは外の様子が見えない。
外にいる観客は、キューブの中で自分の姿を鏡ごしに見るモデル達が見えていたのだ。
まるで妄想障害者のように、自由に踊りながら登場するモデル、
見えない何かに恐れを感じているのか、怯えながら歩くモデルもいれば、
鏡にうつる自分の姿をみて恐ろしい程に大笑いしながら歩くモデルもいた。
真っ白な馬丁貝が敷きつめられたドレスを身にまとったモデルは、
自分を取り巻く何かしらから解き放たれようとしてるかのように
ドレスの貝を勢いよくむしり取り、床に散りばめた。
モデル一人一人が違った人格を表現していた。
観客の視点をモデルが纏う物にフォーカスさせようとする一般的なキャットウオークを覆す劇的なショーであった。
モデル達が退場し、ショーも終わりかと皆が思った時、
キューブの真ん中にあった廃れた箱の側面がゆっくりと倒れ落ち、
ガラスを飛び散らせながら解体された。
箱の中には、ジョエルピーター・ウィトキンの作品そのままの光景があった。
箱の中からやっと解放されたかのように、勢い良く何十匹もの蝶がキューブの中を飛びまう中、
チューブが繋がれたマスクで顔を覆われた裸体の女性がいた。
このショーでマックイーンは、
美しさとは何なのか、という疑問を観客に投げかけていたのだ。
皆が口を揃えて称賛する美しさとは何か。普通とはなにか。
美しいという見解に、どうやってたどり着くのか。
チューブで繋がれたマスクで顔を覆われ、箱に閉じ込められていた女性は、
まるで社会が決めた「美しくないもの」に対する扱いを受けているかのように見える。
小さな箱の中に隔離し、マスクで顔を覆い隠し、自身の存在そのものが屈辱であると思わせる。
しかし、マックイーンはその中にこそ見出せる美しさを、内側からくる美しさというものを表現したかったの
ではないだろうか。
ショーが始まる前に、キューブの側面を全面鏡張りにし、観客に自分の姿を鏡ごしに映したのも、
マックイーンが意図として考えたパフォーマンスの一つであった。
人は、自分の姿を客観的に見ることは出来ない。
自分の目で物事を見たり、自分たちを取り巻く社会のルールを元に、自然と物事を判断している。
自分が美しいとおもうものを、迷いもなく、周りの目も意見も気にする気ともなく直感的に美しいと言える。
そのためには、まず自分の中にある第3の目で自分自身を見つめる必要があるのではないだろうか。
「美しくないものなんて存在しないと思う。‘普通の人’が醜いと捉えるものに、
僕は美しさを見いだせることが出来るんだ。」―アレクサンダー・マックイーン
荒廃した部屋の椅子にもたれかかるマスクを被った裸体の女性。
女性の口にはめているチューブは、壁につるされた猿とつながっている。
「サニトリウム」と題されたこの写真は、アメリカ人フォトグラファー、
ジョエルピーター・ウィトキンの代表作の一つだ。
サニトリウムとは、落ち着いた場所での長期間に渡る入院・休養を必要とする患者のために、都心から遠く離れた自然の中に建てられた療養所を意味する。
1983年に発表されたこの作品は、2001年にアレクサンダー・マックイーンによってランウェイ上で実写化された。
The Third Eye
A masked women lying on a chair naked in a devastated room, breathing through a tube which is tied
with dead monkey on the wall.
This photograph is titled “Sanatorium” – a masterpiece of Joel-Peter Witkin, an American photographer.
Sanatorium is a special care facility which is made for patients who need to be isolated in a tranquil
environment for a long term.
This photograph inspired the presentation of Alexander McQueen’s Spring/Summer 2001 collection.
The collection was performed in a dim room with a huge mirror cube placed in the middle.
While the audience were waiting till the show starts, they were forced to see themselves reflected in the mirror.
Finally when the lights turned off and the cube box lit up the show started.
There were more mirros inside and the walls and floors were painted white as if it was a cure facility.
The first model who showed up was Kate Moss. She wore a beige dress with a fur which runs down from
her shoulder like a waterfall and bandaged her head with a piece of cloth. McQueen explained that it
was symbolizing the cure, the treatment to change oneself.
The cube was doble-mirrowed.The models inside the cube couldn’t see the audience.
The audience outside of the cube could see the
models looking at their reflections in the mirrow inside.
One model was dancing freely as if she had a paranoid disorder. Another model was walking away from
something as if she was frightened by and another model was terrifyingly laughing at her reflection in the mirror.
A model who wore a long dress filled with tons of white razor shell started to pluck
them off and spread them on the floor as if she wanted to release herself from something that surrounds her.
Each model was expressing different personalities.
It was a dramatic performance overthrew the typical catwalk which makes the audience to focus on the
clothes the model wears.
After the last model walked back behind the stage and when everyone thought the show was over,
the walls of the obsolete box which have been set in the middle of the stage slowly collapsed splashing
glasses.
There was the sight of Joel-Peter Witkin’s photograph.
A masked naked women breathing through a tube and tons of butterflies were flying around her as if
they finally got released from the box.
McQueen was questioning to the audience of the notion of beauty through this show.
What is conventional beauty? And what is normal?
How do people conclude something is beautiful?
The masked women who was trapped in a box might be a exxaggeration of the way society treats
individual that is not considered as beautiful.
They hide and put away in a small box, cover with mask and make them feel rediculous being they way they are.
Mcqueen wanted to express the beauty which comes within though his performance.
Forcing the audience to see their reflection though the mirror before the show starts,
was also one of his performance made on purpose.
We can not see ourselves directly or objectively.
We see things though our eyes and judge it based on the rule which is created by the society.
To feel and appleal something beautiful by intuition witough any confusion, witough being bothered by others opinion.
For that, it is important to see ourselves with the third eye which is inside all of us.
